Cryotherapy Lesion Removal
Treatment Overview
Cryotherapy works by applying a controlled stream of extremely cold gas to the lesion. This freezes the unwanted tissue and destroys the targeted cells. Once the Lesion is treated it will darken, dry out and eventually fall away as healthy skin forms underneath.
What The Client Will Feel
During the treatment the client will feel a brief cold stinging
sensation, which usually lasts a few seconds. Afterwards the area may feel warm or slightly tender for a short time. It’s also normal for the lesion to form a small blister or scab as part of the healing process.
Healing Expectations
Most lesions will begin to dry and fall away within 7 to 14 days, although larger or deeper lesions can take a little longer. In some cases more than one treatment may be required to achieve the best result.
Aftercare Overview
After the treatment it’s important to keep the area clean and dry and avoid picking or scratching the lesion. If a blister or scab forms, it’s best to leave it alone so the skin can heal naturally. We also recommend protecting the area from sun exposure and using SPF if it’s on an exposed part of the body.

FAQ’S
Is There A Change In Pigmentation After Treatment?
Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation may occur after cryotherapy, generally lasting a few months, but can be longer lasting. Please ask your practitioner about this before treatment.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
Most lesions will respond to a single treatment. However, some deeper lesions may take several aggressive treatments to get results.
What Are The Risks In Darker Skinned Patients?
Melanocytes are the most sensitive to cold injury. Therefore, they are the most easily damaged with cryotherapy. Darker-skinned patients need to consider the risk of permanent loss of pigment.
How Long Will The Results Last?
For most lesions, cryotherapy is a permanent removal.
Some lesions are harder to remove than others.
Will There Be Scarring?
Typically, it leaves the least amount of scarring of any form of lesion removal because it causes the least damage to the connective tissues. Hypopigmented lesions will be noticeable until they darken.
Will Activities Be Limited After Treatment?
There are no limitations on activity except to protect the area from damage or abrasion. Swimming and showering are not a problem.
How Long Will The Lesion Take To Heal?
Occasionally, a blister might form and persist for up to 5 days.
After, it scabs over the lesions, healing depends on how deep the wound is. Typically, healing will occur from 2–6 weeks, depending on the length of freeze and location.
What Follow-Up Is Neccessary?
Follow-up should be scheduled in 2-4 week intervals to observe results, and for further sessions if required.
What If The Blister Pops?
If the blister pops, the use of an antibiotic cleaning solution or ointment is recommended. Covering the area with a sterile plaster also promotes healing and prevents infection.
